Yaxchilan

Yaxchilán, that in an unspecified maya language means "Green Stones", is an important archaeological site of Maya population. It is located in Chiapas, on the bank of the Usumacinta River.

The ruins of Yaxchilán extend along the course of the river and  in the city centre. The major archaeological groups are: the Central Acropolis, the West Acropolis and the South Acropolis. They boast more than 130-well-maintained ruins.

One of the most suggestive and interesting place in the whole archaeological site is the Labyrinth of Yaxchilán. The structure represents a temple without the possibility to receive light, may be, maya population used to celebrate important and mysterious rites inside.
